Stumbled on a stat that changed how I grocery shop
I read on a food blog that the average family throws away $1,500 worth of food every year. That made me actually check my fridge before buying anything extra. Has anyone else found a surprising number that made them change a habit?

My brother in law runs a restaurant and he says most of that "waste" stat is based on unrealistic tracking methods. I live alone and spend maybe $60 a week on groceries. If I threw away $1,500 a year I'd be tossing over 20% of what I buy which seems really high. I think a lot of that number comes from people who buy huge bulk items at warehouse stores and then let them go bad. Maybe I'm wrong but I've never come close to that kind of waste.

Dude, I feel you on this so hard. That "$1,500 wasted" number always seemed wild to me too. Like, I'm pretty careful with my groceries and I live with just my roommate, and we get through most of what we buy. I think those stats get blown way out of proportion for the average person. Your brother in law probably sees a lot of stuff that doesn't apply to normal households. The bulk buying thing is 100% real though, I see people at Costco grabbing huge packs of stuff they'll never finish.
