Thought cash envelopes were for boomers until my card got skimmed at a Speedway in Ohio
I used to put everything on my debit card and just check the app once a day, which felt fine until someone cloned my card at a gas station in Ohio and drained $612 before I even noticed. After that mess I switched to cash envelopes for groceries and gas, and weirdly I spend about $90 less a month now because handing over real bills hurts in a way tapping a card never did. The first trip felt dumb, like I was playing pretend budget, but by the third trip I stopped doing the mental math at the register. Anyone else go back to cash after a card scare, or did you just freeze the card and keep tapping?
Man, the part nobody talks about is what the skimmer does to your brain, not your wallet. After my card got hit at a pump, every gas station started looking like a crime scene to me, and I stopped using the one by my house even though nothing ever happened there. Cash fixed the money but it also fixed my head, because a bill can't get cloned while I'm standing there. Funny how the scare itself is what makes you change, not the $612. Would you have switched if the bank had covered it all?
