TIL I wasted $300 on a gym membership I barely used
Back in January I signed up for a fancy gym in Denver that cost $75 a month. I figured I'd go every day and get my money's worth. After 4 months I realized I had only been there 8 times total. That works out to about $37 per visit. I finally canceled it yesterday and joined a basic $20 a month place closer to my house. Has anyone else sunk money into a subscription they thought they'd use way more?

The real kicker is how they make you feel like a failure for not going enough, right? Did that fancy gym have any of those hidden fees or cancellation tricks that make it even harder to quit? Because I swear some places make you jump through hoops to cancel those $75 memberships, almost like they know you'll give up. That $20 place closer to home sounds way more doable - I bet you'll actually use it more just because it's convenient.

Did the place actually charge you a "$75 annual maintenance fee" six months in that somehow wasn't mentioned when you signed up? I swear they bet on you forgetting, then hit you with it when it's too late to back out. And good luck canceling, right? They'll make you mail a certified letter, then wait three billing cycles, then call during a specific 2-hour window on a Tuesday. It's like they're running a hostage situation, not a gym. At least at the cheaper place, if you stop going you're only out a few bucks, not a car payment.
