TIL my $40 'bullet journal kit' was a total waste of cash

I saw a fancy ad for a kit with a stencil, special ruler, and tiny washi tapes. Bought it thinking it would make my spreads perfect. Used the stencil once and the ruler is just a normal ruler but pink. Honestly, my favorite pages are still the ones I just doodle in with a regular pen. Anyone have a cheap tool that actually helped their bujo game?

You said your favorite pages are the ones you just doodle. What's stopping you from just doing that all the time instead?

What's stopping me? Probably the same thing that made @young.michael ask this question, a weird need to make things "right" before having fun.

The grocery store colored pencils are an absolute steal. I picked up a pack for 75 cents and they're my go-to for filling in those monthly calendars. Also, one of those clear plastic rulers from the dollar store is perfect for drawing straight lines, it's not fancy but it works better than that expensive pink ruler because you can see through it. The pressure to make things "right" is real, but I found that grabbing a cheap ballpoint pen and just writing down my grocery list in the bujo was way more freeing than trying to make a masterpiece. Now I only buy supplies that let me mess up without feeling bad.

Ugh, I feel this. Bought a whole calligraphy set that's still in the box. My best tool is a 50 cent pack of colored pencils from the grocery store. Lets me add quick color without the fuss. @carr.abby nailed it with that "make things right" pressure.
