Tried to fix my bullet journal's spine with packing tape and it looks like a crime scene now

My $30 Leuchtturm1917 split right down the middle after 4 months of daily use, so I went full MacGyver with clear packing tape and now the whole thing is sticky, wrinkled, and half the pages rip whenever I turn them, so has anyone actually successfully repaired a journal spine without making it worse?

My friend Laura tried this exact thing with her Moleskine. She wrapped the whole spine in duct tape and it was stiff as a board for weeks. Pages kept splitting at the taped edge too. She finally cut the tape off with scissors and used bookbinding glue instead. Dabbed it on a popsicle stick and ran it along the inside crease. Held it closed with rubber bands for a day. It's not perfect but at least the pages don't rip anymore when she flips to her weekly spread.

@emma_wells83 Laura's fix makes TOTAL sense. That bookbinding glue trick is the way to go - duct tape always leaves that gross sticky residue anyway. Your friend probably saved a lot of headaches by ditching the tape method.
