One friend's 'apology' taught me more than any public figure's statement

Back in March, my buddy Dan got called out at a local game night in Austin for an old racist joke he made in 2019. He posted a long apology online, all the right words, said he was 'learning and growing.' But then I saw him two weeks later and he told me he only did it because his boss threatened his job. He laughed about it, said people are too sensitive. That stuck with me more than any celebrity drama. Public apologies feel fake when they come from a lawyer, but Dan's real face made me wonder if anyone actually changes or we just perform for the cameras. Do you think a forced apology can ever turn into real growth, or is it always a lie?
