Read that 1972 letter to the editor defending a politician's 'apology' and it was the exact same playbook people use today
Found it in a library archive in Dayton while killing time on a rain delay, and the writer kept saying 'he's said sorry, what more do you want' like the words alone settled it. Makes me wonder if we ever actually had a time when an apology meant the person changed, or if it was always just about getting people to drop it.

Watched my uncle do this at a family cookout years back, said sorry for some dumb thing he said to my aunt and then went right back to saying the same stuff an hour later. The apology was just a toll he paid to move on, nothing behind it. That letter writer sounds like every manager I ever had who wanted the complaint filed away without anything actually changing.
