TIL I got called out for 12 year old tweets and it actually changed my mind

I thought the whole cancel culture thing was overblown until I saw a comedian I liked lose a tour over jokes from 2012. I went and read them and they were genuinely awful, like racist stuff, not just edgy humor. Has anyone else seen a cancellation that actually made them rethink a person's character?

That comedian you mentioned who lost a tour, did the jokes come with any kind of explanation or apology at the time, or was it just silence until the backlash hit? Because I think that changes whether you see it as a genuine blind spot versus someone who just didn't think they'd get caught. It's one thing to be unaware of your own pattern and another to just assume nobody's keeping receipts.

Went down a rabbit hole once after someone dug up old tweets from a local politician I kinda liked. Found out he had a whole pattern of making fun of people with disabilities, not just one or two bad jokes. Made me realize I was totally missing the bigger picture.

You said they were "genuinely awful, like racist stuff" and that's the thing, it's not just cancel culture being sensitive a lot of the time, you know? I've noticed people in my own life saying things they think are just jokes, but when you actually look at them as a pattern of behavior it reveals a whole side to them you didn't see before. It makes you realize we all have blind spots about people we like, and sometimes getting called out is the only way to see the full picture (even if it sucks at first).
