My $14 burr grinder upgrade after a guy at the Austin farmers market told me to stop buying pre-ground
I was spending $18 a bag on fancy beans but grinding them at the store once a week, and everything tasted flat by Wednesday. A roaster at the Mueller market told me to get a cheap hand grinder and do it fresh each morning, and the same beans suddenly taste like the smelling notes on the bag. Has anyone else noticed how much a grinder changes things before they ever mess with their brew method?
Hold on, you were dropping $18 a bag and then letting the store grinder wreck it for you? That hurt to read. The store grinder at my HEB is the same one everybody uses for dark roast and flavored stuff, so your beans pick up whatever ghost flavor was in there last. A $14 hand grinder beating that setup makes total sense. The smell thing gets me too, like the second you crack the beans fresh the whole kitchen changes.
