PSA: I brewed with tap water for 5 years and ruined thousands of cups, all because of one bad habit
So I live in Phoenix and the water here is hard as a rock. For 5 years I just filled my kettle from the sink, ground my beans, and wondered why my coffee always tasted flat and kind of chalky. I thought it was my grinder or my beans. Last month my buddy Marcus came over and asked why I wasn't using filtered water. I laughed and said water is water. He poured me two cups, one with tap and one with the filtered stuff from his fridge, same beans, same grind. The difference was insane. The tap cup tasted like wet cardboard and the filtered one actually had sweetness and some fruit thing going on. I felt like a total idiot. I went out that day and got a $30 pitcher filter and my coffee has been completely different since. I'm not even joking, I almost gave up on home brewing because of this. So my question is, do you all filter your water or am I the only one who was sleeping on this for half a decade?
Five years of wet cardboard coffee in Phoenix and you never once wondered why the sink water left white crust on your kettle? That part blows my mind more than the taste test. Here in Phoenix we have some of the hardest water in the country, like 15 grains per gallon hard, and calcium just kills the flavor of coffee. Your buddy Marcus did you a solid. I filter mine now too, but I'll be honest, I brewed on tap for close to 3 years before I figured it out, so you're not alone. What pitcher did you end up getting?
