Realized my French press game was off after a barista in Portland set me straight

I've been using a French press for like 3 years and thought I had it down. Last Saturday I was at this tiny shop in Portland, and the barista asked if I wanted to taste their press pot. She let me try hers and it was night and day different - way cleaner and brighter. Turns out I was pressing too fast and using water that was way too hot, like boiling hot. She showed me to wait 4 minutes and press slow over 20 seconds. Now my morning coffee actually tastes good instead of bitter. Anybody else have a basic technique they thought they knew but were totally doing wrong?

Yeah that 4 minute wait was a game changer for me too.

Did you end up adjusting your routine around that time too?

Isn't it wild how the smallest tweaks change EVERYTHING in life?
