Used to scrub my burr grinder with rice every month, now I just buy the $8 tablets
For two years I ran white rice through my grinder on the first of every month because some forum post from 2011 swore by it. Then a barista at a shop in Portland asked what I was doing and said the rice dust was probably gunking up the burrs worse than the old grounds. I switched to the cleaning tablets you grind through like beans, 3 cycles and done, and my next shot tasted noticeably less stale. The rice thing never fully rinsed out either, I was finding grains in the hopper weeks later. Takes me 5 minutes now instead of 20 and I am not worried about chipping the burrs. Anyone else get steered wrong by old forum advice like that?
