A colorist in Detroit handed me a card and told me to turn down every walk-in for six weeks, and I actually did it
Six weeks felt like a huge risk at the time. I had a steady chair but my books were spotty and walk-ins filled the gaps. She was a colorist at a salon over on Woodward, older than me by a good 20 years, and she said flat out: "If you keep saying yes to everyone who walks in, you'll never build a client list that actually pays your rent."
So I tried it starting the second week of March. I turned down 14 walk-ins in those six weeks. Hurt my wallet bad for the first three weeks, no lie. But I got pickier about who I booked, and I started actually asking people to rebook before they left the chair instead of just hoping they'd call. By the end of week six my books were full through the next month and I had raised my color prices by $15.
I keep wondering if I got lucky or if there's something to what she said. Do you all take walk-ins or do you protect your schedule?
