Had a random client in Wichita who changed how I do highlights

I was doing a foil set for this lady Brenda last Tuesday, and she just casually mentioned she used to do her own hair with a cap and hook in the 80s. She said something like 'you gotta let the lighter pieces breathe, they tell you where they wanna sit.' It was so simple but I realized I'd been overthinking placement on every head after that. Anyone else had a client drop some weird wisdom on you that actually works?

My aunt used to thread her own brows and told me "just let the arch find you.

Holding out for the other side of this one. Let your highlights just "breathe" and "tell you where they wanna sit"? That's like saying let your tires decide where to drive the car. You're the professional for a reason. If you stop thinking about placement you're just winging it on someone's head. That cap and hook approach from the 80s was a mess for a reason, letting chunks of hair decide their own fate is how you get those stripey, raccoon tail highlights. Sometimes the client's "wisdom" is just them justifying stuff they did wrong back in the day.

Let the arch find you, huh? Mine would probably just wander off and get lost.
