Hot take: I used to hate those fancy Japanese shears, but after trying a pair at a show in Chicago last month I totally get the hype now

The cutting action was so smooth I actually caught myself smiling at the mirror and it felt like the blades were doing all the work, has anyone else had a moment where a tool just clicked for you?

Whoa wait, you smiled at your own reflection in a barbershop mirror? That's a level of shear satisfaction I did not know was possible. I guess that's what happens when quality actually does the thinking for you.

Funny how a good cut makes you realize how often we settle for okay everywhere else in life.

Start paying attention to what else you're settling for, it spreads quick.

That exact thing hit me last week at Frank's Barbershop on 5th Ave. Got a cut from the old guy there for 15 bucks and walked out feeling like a completely different person. It's wild how we get used to just being "fine" with stuff - haircuts, coffee, even how we talk to ourselves in the mirror. I used to settle for whatever barber was closest and just accept the mediocre result, like it was normal or something. Now I drive 20 minutes extra to Frank's and it forces me to think about what else I'm letting slide. Feels like once you see what quality actually looks like, it changes your whole standard for everything.
