The way I used to do root touch-ups vs. now with freehand painting

Back when I started out in 2019 at a salon in Austin, I always used foils for root touch-ups. It took forever and the lines always felt too harsh. Then I watched a class from a stylist named Jenna Rae about freehand painting with a tint brush, and I switched over about six months ago. My application time dropped from 45 minutes to maybe 20, and the blend is way softer. Have any of you made the jump away from foils for roots?

Nodding hard at this. I was using those little angle rulers for years on my drawings. Felt like I couldn't trust my own wrist. Then one night I just snapped and started sketching without any guides. Honestly my lines look way more alive now. Little wobbles actually make it look human.

Totally changed my mind once I tried freehand. Never going back now.

Oh man, same here! I always swore by rulers and guides because I thought my hand was too shaky for straight lines. Then I had to sketch something quick on a napkin at a coffee shop and just went for it. Turns out my freehand lines actually have more character and don't look so stiff. I started practicing with just simple shapes first, like boxes and circles, and now I can do pretty decent straight lines without thinking about it. It feels so much more natural and faster too, no more stopping to grab a ruler every five seconds.
