Vent: I was mixing developer in a plastic bowl for 5 years before a client's hair started smoking

The oxidizing agents in hair developer are usually hydrogen peroxide at 20, 30, or 40 volume. When you mix that with metal from the bowl or a spoon, it can create a chemical reaction that heats up fast. Plastic bowls are fine as long as they're salon grade polypropylene, but a scratched up one can also cause issues. That smoking client probably had leftover metallic salts in their hair from a previous dye job, which is what really sets things off.

It's wild how many things we just do because it's the way we've always seen it done. You see this with cleaning products too, mixing stuff in random containers that really shouldn't be mixed. It's a scary reminder that common practice isn't always safe practice, and sometimes you get lucky for years before it goes wrong.

And it's not just cleaning stuff, think about all the unsafe shortcuts we take with food prep too.
