A critique on my dialogue said every character sounded like me, so I spent a month fixing that
Last month I posted a story excerpt and someone commented that all five characters had the exact same voice, which was basically my own. They pointed out that my firefighter and my librarian both said "look, here's the thing" in chapter one. I went back and wrote a list of verbal tics for each person, like one uses short sentences and another never answers questions directly. It took me 30 days and about 40 pages of rewrites, but now my beta readers actually ask which character is talking. Has anyone else gotten feedback that felt harsh but turned out to be the best thing for their writing?
