Can we talk about picking between two prompts and how badly I fumbled it
I run a small writing group here in Columbus and last month I made everyone pick between two prompts I wrote on the spot. Option one was a letter from a person to their younger self. Option two was a scene where two strangers get stuck in an elevator. Nine of the twelve people went with the elevator one, and I was kind of annoyed since the letter prompt felt way more interesting to me. I ended up writing the letter one myself and mine was easily the worst thing read that night. My friend Dana said my letter sounded like a work email to a coworker, and she was not wrong. Now I wonder if my prompts just sound better than they actually are once someone sits down to write. Is the problem my prompt or do most letters like that just fall flat?
