Froze up at my first open mic in Tulsa because my prompt was 'write about a door'
I sat there for a full 90 seconds staring at my notebook while about 30 people watched me sweat, so I finally just read the first line I'd scribbled, 'the door knew more than I did,' and worked from there. Turns out starting with one dumb line beats waiting for a good one, and now I keep a page of throwaway openers for prompts that scare me. What's your go-to move when a prompt goes totally blank on you?
Freezing up is so real. My first slam I just described the actual room I was in, the lights, the people, the exit sign, because my brain was totally empty on the prompt. Weirdly it worked and now that's my backup, just narrate whatever is right in front of me.
