I finally stopped buying those 99 cent writing prompt cards
I had this drawer full of those little prompt cards you get at bookstores, probably 40 of them after a year. Every time I sat down to write, I'd shuffle through them and feel like I was doing homework instead of making a story. Then I tossed them all and started using random news headlines from my local paper, and my scenes got so much more specific and weird. Has anyone else ditched a writing tool that just made them freeze up?

Wrote off a whole tool because you couldn't make it work? Prompt cards are just a starting point, not some magic fix. If shuffling through them made you feel like you were doing homework, the problem might not have been the cards. Sounds like the newspaper headlines are working for you, so cool, but that doesn't mean the cards were the issue. Tbh most writing tools are only as good as what you put into them. Plenty of people make great stuff from prompts every day.
