I thought the 'write 10 bad versions on purpose' prompt was a gimmick until it saved my short story last Tuesday
I kept rewriting the same opening line of a short story about a bus driver for 3 nights straight and hated every version. Then I found a prompt that said to write 10 deliberately terrible openings, like one where he wakes up and it was all a dream. By bad version number 6 I wrote 'He counted the passengers twice because the first count felt wrong' and that ended up being the real opener. The trick works because your inner critic shuts up when it knows the goal is garbage. Does anyone have a prompt like this for endings? My last lines are still weak.
Isn't that just how we do everything, like brainstorming dumb ideas with friends until one sticks? Same deal when I'm cooking, throw out the gross combos first and the good one shows up on its own.
