My neighbor's comment about 'bad guys' flipped a switch for me
I was telling my neighbor about a fantasy story idea where the villain wants to melt the polar ice caps, and he just said, 'But what if he's right and the world needs a reset?' That one line made me stop and rethink my whole plot. What's a time a casual chat totally changed a story you were working on?

Oh man, that happened to me once. I was stuck on a mystery story where the butler did it, super cliche. My friend asked why the butler would even stay for 20 years if he hated the family. That simple question made me rewrite the whole thing into a story about blackmail and secret loyalty. It was way better.

Lol "what if he's right" is such a dangerous thing to hear from a neighbor. Bro just gave you the ultimate plot twist for free.

Honestly, that neighbor comment is a gift. Had a guy at the bus stop once ask me why my main character would even go back to her hometown. Totally changed the story's whole middle act. You gotta listen to those random questions, they poke holes you're too close to see. Write it down even if you hate the idea at first. Let it sit for a day, then see if it makes a weird kind of sense. Sometimes the best fixes come from outside your own head.

@harperp24 But what if your neighbor IS right, and you just blew off the one guy who actually knew the truth?
