Showerthought: I tried a random prompt generator for a month, then switched to building my own list
For about four weeks, I used a site called Promptotron to get ideas, but the results were often too vague or weirdly specific. Then I started keeping a small notebook and just writing down one interesting thing I saw or heard each day in my town, like 'the guy at the diner arguing with the jukebox.' Having that real, concrete detail to start from made the writing part way easier, at least for me. Has anyone else moved from using online generators to a more personal prompt system?

Switched to a notes app on my phone for the same reason. Writing down actual conversations or weird street signs gives me something solid to work with. The made up stuff never stuck for me either.

Made up stuff" is where the real creativity starts though.

My notebook from 2019 has 47 pages of pure fantasy - dragons, time travel, a coffee shop that predicted the future. That stuff felt more real to me than any conversation I overheard on the bus. Its easier to build a world from scratch than try to twist real life into something interesting.
