Showerthought: The 3am notebook is a trap and most prompt lists get this backwards
I keep a small notebook by my bed and for about two years I thought the ideas I wrote down at 3am were gold. Then I actually counted: out of 64 late night scribbles, I used exactly 2 of them in a finished story. The rest were just me being tired and thinking a half sentence sounded deep. What I learned is that a prompt works way better when I write it down fast, then sit with it for a day before I decide if it has anything in it. My best prompts now come from stuff I noticed on a walk or heard at the grocery store, not from forcing myself to be creative when I should be asleep. Does anyone else keep a running list somewhere, or do you just trust whatever pops into your head while you're doing dishes?
