Finally caught myself falling for a deep fake after 6 months of missing them
I've been in this group for about 6 months now, watching all those breakdown videos and thinking I was getting pretty good at spotting fakes. But last night I was scrolling through Twitter and saw this clip of a politician saying something wild at a rally in Ohio. My heart was pounding, I was ready to share it everywhere. Then I noticed the shadow under his chin was pointing left while the sun was clearly on the right side of the frame. That one little detail made me pause and actually look closer at the mouth movements and the weird blur around his hairline. It felt so real at first glance because the voice sync was nearly perfect and the background moved naturally. Anyone else have that moment where you realize you've been missing the simplest clues like lighting or reflections?

Got the shadows down pat? Start checking the eyes. Deepfakes still can't nail the tiny reflections in the cornea that shift when someone looks around a room. Also pay attention to teeth - they usually have a flat, plastic look without the subtle yellowing or spacing real teeth have. Been burned by a political clip where the only giveaway was the guy's teeth were too white and perfectly shaped when he smiled.

Lighting and reflections are good tells but they keep getting better at fixing those. The thing that trips me up more is when the deep fake copies mannerisms exactly but messes up the timing of them like blinking too slow or reacting to something a second late. Saw one where the person scratched their nose but the finger went a little too far up and that was the only clue the whole video gave away. Its frustrating because we train our eyes on the big stuff like shadows but the little human delays are what really separate real from fake in my experience.

The nose scratch thing you mentioned reminds me of a clip I saw where the person's hand moved up to fix their hair but it just looked slightly off, almost like the motion was missing a tiny pause that happens naturally. Its really unsettling how these little timing glitches are the only giveaway now, because you feel like something is wrong but you cant put your finger on it until you rewatch a few times. I totally get the frustration, its like we have to become experts in micro movements just to figure out what's real anymore.
