Got fooled by a deepfake audio of my own boss last week

I got a voicemail from my head chef saying the schedule changed and I should come in 2 hours late. It sounded exactly like him down to his grumpy tone, so I showed up late and got chewed out. How do you guys verify audio calls without sounding paranoid?

Hate that this is a thing now. Smart to hang up and call back.

Heard a buddy of mine got that same scam call pretending to be his bank's fraud department. He almost gave them his info but something felt off, so he hung up and called the number on his card. Turned out to be totally fake, @smith.elliot you nailed it with that advice. These scams are getting scary good with spoofed numbers and everything lol. My friend said he felt dumb for almost falling for it, but hey, at least he caught himself before it was too late.

Wait, you actually got a voicemail from your boss's voice that was completely fake? That's insane. @lucast81 I remember you mentioning that bank scam, but this is on a whole other level. Now I'm paranoid about every voicemail I get from work. I think the only way to handle this is to call the person back on their actual phone number, like the one you have saved in your contacts, and just say "hey you called?" without bringing up the deepfake. That way you're not acting suspicious but you catch the lie.
