I lost $250 to a fake video of a home repair expert

A few months back, I saw a video on social media that looked like a well known home repair guy showing a simple fix for a leaky faucet. The voice and face seemed right, so I bought the special tool kit he was pushing for $250. When it arrived, the tools were cheap junk that broke on first use. Looking back, the video had that slight lip-sync lag and his skin looked too smooth, like plastic. I was so focused on the problem I needed to solve that I missed the clear signs. It was a hard lesson in checking the source before you click buy. Has anyone else been tricked by a fake how-to video like that?

Yeah, always check the verified badge on the account first. Those deepfake ads are getting way too good now.

Seriously, they're getting way too good. I almost fell for a fake one with a celebrity voice last week.

Got a buddy named Mike who almost got taken for a ride last month. He saw this ad for some crypto thing with Elon Musk's face on it and the voice sounded just like him. Mike was about to put in two hundred bucks before he noticed the account was some random string of numbers with no blue check. He called me laughing about it but man, if that badge hadn't caught his eye he'd have been out that money for sure. It's scary how real those things look now, you really gotta look close at every little detail before you trust anything.

Honestly @samrodriguez, I still think the signs are pretty obvious if you look close.
