Remember when fake videos had obvious seams and bad lighting

Back in 2018 I was looking at those early deep fakes where Tom Cruise was supposedly doing magic tricks. The seams were so obvious you could spot them from across the room. Skin tones didn't match, the lighting was off, and the mouth movements were always a little behind the audio. I remember showing one to my dad and he laughed because the fake Tom blinked way too fast. Now these new videos have gotten so smooth I can barely tell sometimes even after staring at them for 10 minutes. Lately I've been sticking with the old method of checking the ears and hairline because those still seem to mess up the AI. Has anyone else noticed the newer fakes getting better at teeth and eye reflections though?

Wait are you sure about the ear thing? I've seen a bunch of fakes lately where the ears and hairline are actually perfect but the teeth just look like one solid white block with no depth. Like that viral Obama video from last month had ear shadows that matched the lighting perfectly but his teeth looked like they were painted on. And don't even get me started on eye reflections in those old Tom Cruise fakes where the eyes had like two catchlights that didn't match any light source in the room. The new ones have gotten scary good at matching the cornea reflections but they still can't handle teeth with fillings or any kind of dental work. I caught one last week where the person had a gold tooth that just completely vanished in the fake.

Wait have you actually tested that ear thing yourself or just repeating what you saw online? The gold tooth vanishing is a solid tell though, never thought to check for that.
