That $40 voice cloning software had me convinced it was my brother calling for help

I downloaded this program last week to mess around with. Tested it on a 30 second clip of my brother talking from a voicemail. The result was so good I honestly thought it was him on the phone when I played it back. What tipped me off was the breathing pattern - it just didn't pause in the right spots. Made me realize I've been way too trusting of phone calls from people I know.

Oh come on, you're falling for a recording that easy? If you can't tell your own brother's voice from a computer copy, maybe you just aren't listening close enough in the first place.

Yeah but I think you're kind of missing what actually scares people about this. It's not that the voice sounds exactly like someone you know, it's that it can trick your brain for like 3 or 4 seconds when you're not expecting it. My cousin got a call from "his mom" last month and it took him until she said something about a car accident for him to realize the timing was off and the breaths didn't feel right. That's the scary part, not that it's perfect but that it's good enough to get you in that split second where your guard is down.

Ngl I used to roll my eyes at people freaking out about AI voices but this honestly changed my mind lol. That breathing thing is exactly what got me too, like once you notice it you can't unhear it.
