That deep fake expert said to check the teeth, and it worked

A guy on YouTube who analyzes political deep fakes said to zoom in on teeth because AI still struggles with consistent enamel shading. I tried it on a viral video of a CEO apology and sure enough, the teeth shifted color between cuts. Has anyone else found this trick useful for spotting fakes?

Been working with digital video for years and I totally see this, but here's what gets me - did the teeth shift in a way that matched the lighting changes in the room? Because in that CEO apology video I saw, the teeth went from a warm yellow to a cool blueish white between cuts, but the background lighting stayed exactly the same. I keep wondering if these AI models are getting better at hiding that stuff, or if there's some other tell we're all missing.

The part about the teeth shifting while background lighting stayed the same is the real question. If AI models are getting better at matching lighting across cuts, then checking teeth might stop working pretty soon. Have you spotted any other subtle tells that seem harder for these fakes to get right yet?

The teeth shifting from warm yellow to cool blue while the background stays the same is exactly the tell I've been watching for. In that CEO video, I froze a frame of the teeth in one cut and another in the next cut, the color temp was totally different even though the room lighting hadn't changed at all. Another quick test is to look at the ears and nose bridge area if the lighting moves differently than the rest of the face, that's a dead giveaway too. I've also started checking how the eyes reflect light between cuts, AI still messes up the catchlight shape more often than you'd think.
