Hit $5,000 in monthly care costs last month and it finally made me sit down

I was just adding up what we spend on Mom's assisted living, meds, and a part time aide. $5,000 even. I knew it was a lot but seeing that number on paper hit different. We been just paying month to month without really planning. Who else has had a wake up call like that from just adding stuff up? What did you do after?

Honestly I did the same thing with our own budget last year and it felt like getting punched in the gut with a spreadsheet. Ngl I celebrated by immediately going to buy a cheaper brand of coffee like that was gonna fix anything.

Made myself a chart of all the grocery spending and found out I was basically funding the local snack aisle singlehandedly. Switched to store brand cereal the next week felt like a small victory. @barbara_jenkins66 at least we're facing the numbers even if the coffee switch felt pointless. Sometimes you just need that cheap caffeine to cope with the truth.

Has anyone tracked what you actually throw out versus what you eat?
