Plunked down $2,400 on a stairlift for my mom last spring and it saved her hip after she tripped on the stairs twice - has anyone else dodged a big injury with a gadget they were on the fence about?

I was about to cancel the install because I thought it was too pricey, but the company guy told me a story about a client who broke their leg waiting another month, and now I sleep way better at night knowing she's safe.

Oh man, I feel this so hard. I was dead set on cancelling my mom's stairlift too, right up until the install guy said an older lady he worked with fell and cracked her pelvis while she was "just waiting another month." I mean, that haunted me. Now I joke that the thing is basically a gold-plated safety net, but honestly, it's cheaper than a hip replacement.

Does anyone else find it kind of wild how we will drop money on gadgets to make life a little easier but balk at the stuff that actually keeps us safe? I mean, I've seen it with friends and their parents too. It's like we've all got this mental block where spending on safety feels like throwing money away until it's too late. I think a lot of it is just us not wanting to admit we're getting older or that someone we love needs help. But then you hear a story like that install guy's and it snaps you out of it. It's funny how a cheap thing like a grab bar or a good pair of shoes can feel like a big deal until you realize how much worse the alternative is.

Jumped on that same fence for months before pulling the trigger. Ended up going with a curved rail model since our stairs have a landing, and it set me back almost $3,000. What sealed it for me was watching my mom grab the handrail and still look shaky - one bad step and we'd be in the ER. @charles836 is right about the gold-plated safety net thing, but I figure it's like cheap insurance when you do the math against a hospital bill. Did you go with a straight or curved rail, and have your mom started using it daily yet?
