Question about moving my mom into assisted living

Last week I toured three places near Portland and the cheapest was $4,200 a month. How are you all covering these costs without running through savings in two years?

Wait, does the state actually cover her basic stuff after you drain everything?

If you can't afford it, you just figure it out. Sell the house if she has one, that's what it's for. My aunt moved into a place and they took her social security and pension, she didn't have much left but the state kicked in some help. $4,200 sounds high but that's Portland for you, look further out in the sticks. You're supposed to burn through savings for this stuff, that's why people save money in the first place. Worst case, Medicaid covers nursing homes if she really has nothing left.

Respectfully disagree a bit... not everyone has a house to sell, and burning through everything just to qualify for help feels like a punishment for trying to be responsible in the first place.
