The financial planner who told my mom to 'just stop buying coffee' was no help at all
Met with a guy at a big firm in Chicago last month to talk about my mom's retirement savings and he spent 20 minutes lecturing her about skipping her daily latte. She's 72 and has $12,000 in credit card debt from medical bills, not from coffee runs. Has anyone found a financial advisor who actually gets the real costs of elder care?

I've actually read that some states have their own certification programs too, so depending on where you live, you might find someone through your state bar association's referral service. That's probably more reliable than just Googling around. My neighbor went through a similar search last year and she said the National Elder Law Foundation website was helpful but it's not the only place to look. Some lawyers specialize in elder law without being certified through that foundation, which is worth keeping in mind. It really pays to check their experience with specific issues like Medicaid planning or guardianship stuff.

Kinda like that mechanic who said my truck needed a new transmission when it was just a bad hose.
