The nursing home tour in Phoenix that made me ask about their fire drill logs

I was checking out this facility for my mom last month with my brother, and everything looked great at first. The rooms were clean, the staff was friendly, and they had a nice garden out back. But then I noticed the fire evacuation plan was just taped to a wall behind a potted plant, barely visible. I asked the director when their last fire drill was, and she kind of stumbled saying it was a while ago. My brother and I pushed for a walkthrough of their emergency procedures, and it turned out they hadn't updated their resident contact list in over a year. That whole experience shifted my focus from just checking amenities to digging into their safety protocols instead. Has anyone else found hidden issues like this during a tour that changed your mind about a place?

Heard the exact same kind of story from my friend Sarah last year. She toured this place near Scottsdale for her dad and the sales lady was pushing the fancy dining room and the new card machines for bingo night. Sarah asked about the emergency generator backup and the lady got real quiet before saying it was tested quarterly. My friend happened to know a maintenance guy who worked there part time and he told her later that generator hadn't run in over a year and the last test was just someone flipping the switch and it not turning on. She walked right out of there and never looked back. It's scary how many places put all their money into looking good instead of being safe.

Oh man, that story makes me glad you caught that. But I gotta point out one thing that bugged me. You said they hadn't updated the resident contact list in over a year, which is bad, but fire drills are actually way more important than that stupid list. If the place catches fire and the staff haven't practiced moving people out in months, that contact list isn't saving anyone. The director stumbling on when the last drill was is a huge red flag, way bigger than the plant hiding the plan. I worked in an old folks home for two summers and we did drills every single month like clockwork. That director probably knew exactly when the last drill was, she just didn't want to say it was like two years ago or something. You were right to push for more info, and honestly if they get weird about safety stuff during a tour, that place is probably cutting corners on everything else too.

@miller.diana did that maintenance guy say if that generator still worked at all?
