Vent: My sister thinks we should keep Mom home no matter what
I had a blowup with my sister last weekend after she said we should just bring our 82 year old mom here instead of a facility. She lives in Oregon and visits twice a year, I'm the one here in Phoenix dealing with the falls and the forgetting meals. She kept saying 'family takes care of family' like I'm being heartless or something. But who is going to watch her while I work my 9 to 5, and what happens when she needs more help than I can give? Has anyone else had a sibling who just doesn't get the daily reality of this stuff?

Used to think family care was always best until I saw what it did to a neighbor's health and marriage.

Man, that hits close to home. @lucasw84, what did you actually see happening with them that made it fall apart? Was it the stress of keeping up with everything or more about them burning out over time? I've seen folks get into arguments over small stuff once they're worn thin from caregiving.

My sister pulled that exact same "family takes care of family" line on me when our dad started wandering at night. She lived three states away, called once a week, and thought I was being dramatic. I lasted eight months before I had a breakdown in the grocery store over canned beans. That's when I realized I couldn't be the only one responsible for keeping him safe.
