Saw a stat about cloud storage energy use that blew my mind

I was reading a report from the International Energy Agency and found out data centers use about 1-2% of the world's electricity, which is way more than I thought for something we just treat like magic. It got me thinking is this cloud boom just a fad that'll get too expensive and dirty to keep going or is it gonna be the norm forever? Has anyone else looked into how much power their cloud storage actually eats up?

My buddy works at a server farm. Says they got backup generators big enough to run a small town. Just sitting there humming. Kinda wild when you think about it.

Read a study that said streaming video uses way more power than people realize. Took about 300 hours of email to equal one streaming movie in energy cost. Cloud storage is just the tip of the iceberg. Data centers are basically giant toasters running 24/7. @beth_park's friend is right about those backup generators. They gotta keep those servers cold and running no matter what. Makes you wonder if all those cloud trends will stick around once people see the bill.

Turning off autoplay helps a ton with that.
