So, I always thought smart pet feeders were a silly trend for lazy people. My dog kept getting into the food bag and eating too much. I got one as a last try, and it actually stopped the mess and kept him on schedule. Now I'm sure they're not just a fad.

Actually, you hit on something bigger. It's not just about laziness or schedules. For some dogs, it's a security thing. They get anxious about when food comes. The feeder takes you out of the equation. No more begging at a person. The machine just does its job. It can really chill out a nervous pet.

@oliver855, the part about the machine calming a nervous pet is right for some. But I've seen dogs that just watch the feeder all day. Now they stare at the box like it's about to talk.

My dog has started treating the automatic feeder like his personal butler, waiting for it to serve him. After reading @oliver855's point, I realize it's probably more about anxiety than laziness. Honestly, I do the same thing with my microwave when I'm hungry, so who am I to judge? It's funny how we both end up staring at machines, hoping they'll speed up. But yeah, the feeder does help him chill out, even if he looks a bit obsessed.

The microwave comparison is a bit off. A microwave is a tool you actively use, while the feeder works on its own schedule. The dog isn't trying to make it go faster, he's just learned the pattern. It's more like waiting for a bus you know arrives at 5:15 than staring at an oven timer.
