That chat with a 10 year old about NFTs really threw me
I was hanging out with my nephew Leo last weekend, he's 10 and way into Minecraft. He started telling me about how him and his friends are buying and selling 'skins' as NFTs on some kid-friendly platform they found. I asked him if he thought that stuff would matter in 5 years and he just shrugged and said 'it's just trading cards but online, uncle.' It hit me different because he saw it as no different than Pokemon cards, like this tech is just normal to him. Has anyone else had a kid explain a trend in a way that made you question if it's really a fad?

That moment when a kid completely normalizes something you thought was weird is always eye opening. My neighbor's daughter does the same with Roblox - she treats virtual items like toys from a bin at a garage sale, trading them without a second thought. Maybe the real fad is how adults keep trying to make every digital thing into a big deal instead of letting it be just another way kids play. It reminds me of how I used to trade pogs and later Magic cards, and nobody back then called it an investment or a revolution. Your nephew might actually be the smart one here, just seeing it as a normal part of his world that will probably fade or change just like every other hobby.

Honestly, what worked for me with my own nephews was just letting them teach me the game instead of me trying to analyze it. I sat down with my oldest nephew during a Roblox session and asked him to show me his favorite game mode. He literally built a whole castle in front of me while explaining the lore like it was the most obvious thing in the world. I stopped overthinking and just played with him, trading virtual hats and weapons like we were passing candy back and forth. It made me realize kids don't care about long term value or market trends, they just want someone to build a fort with. That simple shift in my attitude made the whole thing way more fun for both of us.

Nah, I think adults overthinking it actually shows we care more than kids do...
