That $200 air purifier I bought during wildfire season in Oregon worked great, but now I'm wondering if it was actually a scam.
I dropped $200 on a top rated air purifier when the smoke got bad in August, and the air quality monitor in my living room dropped from 180 to 15 in an hour flat but a buddy of mine said the whole thing is just placebo and the HEPA filter might be fake since it's the same brand that got sued last year for lying about their ratings has anyone else tested their purifier against a real sensor?

Wait, you actually put a real air quality monitor next to it and saw it drop from 180 to 15? That's way more proof than most people have when they call something a scam. I used to think those air purifiers were just expensive fans too, honestly. I read some article about fake HEPA filters and figured the whole thing was a ripoff. But seeing actual numbers like that from a real sensor changes my mind. Sounds like your unit is legit, even if the company has some sketchy history with other models.

Placebo doesn't drop your air quality monitor from 180 to 15. That's a concrete measurement, not a feeling. Your buddy is probably repeating stuff he read online without actually testing anything himself. The brand being sued is a valid concern though, you should look up the specific lawsuit details and see if your model was involved. Grab a cheap laser particle counter off Amazon for like $40 and run both units side by side with a candle burning. That'll tell you real fast if the filter is working or if you got sold a fancy fan.
