Had a sewing teacher in Chicago tell me my fabric choices were boring and she was spot on

I was at this little workshop on Addison Street last spring and brought in this plain navy cotton for a dress pattern. She flat out said "you're playing it too safe, nobody remembers beige." It stuck with me because she was right, I always picked neutral stuff to avoid messing up. Has anyone else had a teacher or mentor call them out on playing it too safe with fabrics?

Wait did she actually say nobody remembers beige because that's honestly iconic and lowkey true tho

Nobody remembers beige" is basically the most savage thing I've ever heard a sewing instructor say, and I've had a chef tell me my knife work looked like a raccoon did it. She wasn't wrong though, I spent two years making everything in shades of oatmeal and gray because I was terrified of picking a fabric that would show every mistake. Now I just lean into the chaos with loud prints and hope nobody looks too close at the seams.

That "nobody remembers beige" hits different because we play it safe with our whole lives, not just fabric.
