Just tried a double layer of tulle over a silk charmeuse for a skirt
The light did this crazy shimmer thing I never expected, totally changed the whole piece. Anyone know other fabric combos that give surprising effects?

Pure magic" sounded silly to me, but that trick is real.

My old costume shop used to layer chiffon over lame for ghostly highlights. The trick is using a sheer with a totally different texture than the shiny base. It scatters the light in a way one fabric never could.
