Question about using old curtains for a project

I found a box of my grandma's old lace curtains in the attic last weekend, and I decided to try making a top out of them. It took me about three days to figure out the pattern without cutting the lace wrong, but I finally got it. The best part was showing my mom, who recognized the fabric right away and got a little emotional. It's not perfect, but it feels good to make something new from something old. Has anyone else tried working with vintage fabric like this?

That's such a special way to keep a memory alive. Giving old fabric a new purpose is always worth the extra effort. Your mom's reaction must have made all the work feel even better.

Oh that's a really lovely project. I read a blog post a while back about how working with old fabric, especially lace, means you have to go slow and follow the pattern it already has, which it sounds like you did perfectly. What @the_alex said is so true, that reaction from your mom is the real reward, it turns it from just a craft into something way more important. I have an old tablecloth from my aunt that I'm too scared to cut into, but this makes me want to try. The little flaws just add to the story, you know?

Exactly. The flaws are the best part.
