Rant: My napkin-sketching habit turned a dress into a joke
Honestly, I got into the habit of doodling design ideas on napkins during coffee breaks. Tbh, it seemed harmless until I used a permanent marker on a cheap napkin. I laid it on a plain white dress I was making, and the ink bled right through. Ngl, now it has this weird, blotchy pattern that looks like a toddler went wild. People at my last show kept asking if it was meant to be abstract art.

Coffee break napkin doodles have cost me a few projects too. It's so frustrating when something simple goes wrong like that. Permanent markers are ruthless on cheap paper, and it's easy to forget how much they can transfer. Honestly, if people are calling it abstract art, maybe you can roll with it and say it's intentional. Mistakes like that happen to everyone who makes things by hand. Don't let it kill your habit, just maybe use a sketchbook next time.

Disagree about switching to a sketchbook. Napkin doodles capture raw ideas that feel too planned in a sketchbook. I once ruined a napkin sketch with marker bleed, but it revealed a better shape for my design. That kind of accident can push your work in new directions. Sticking with napkins keeps the process loose and honest. Changing your habit might kill the creative spark.

Sharpies are the worst for that, bled right through a napkin once and ruined a forklift path drawing I was working on. Looked like some weird Rorschach test by the time the ink soaked through. Had to laugh and accept it was a complete mess.
