Rant: That one sleeve took me a solid week to get right
I was working on a dress design last month, trying to make a big, puffy sleeve that still looked light. The pattern kept coming out stiff and weird, like a deflated balloon. I must have made six different muslin versions, tweaking the curve and the seam allowance each time. It finally worked when I cut the pattern on the bias instead of straight grain. Has anyone else had a simple idea turn into a week-long fight with the fabric?

Tell me about it, I fought with a bias-cut slip dress for days. What @ward.anna said about the drape is so true, it just falls differently. I finally got it by cutting the pieces way bigger than I thought and letting the fabric hang for a day before I even touched it.

Oh man, the bias cut is a lifesaver sometimes.

Beth147 is totally right about the bias cut. I read an article a while back that explained how cutting fabric on the diagonal uses the natural stretch in the weave. It makes things drape in such a flattering way instead of just hanging there. That little bit of give is why it works for so many different body shapes. It's one of those sewing tricks that seems like magic when you first try it. You end up with a much better fit without needing a ton of complicated pattern changes.
