Showerthought: I just hit 100 sketches for a single 'deconstructed blazer' concept and realized I've been overthinking the whole thing.

After filling a whole Moleskine with variations, the one my friend said looked 'effortlessly cool' was literally my first, super simple draft from 3 months ago.

What is it about our brains that makes us ignore the simple answer right in front of us? We have to take the scenic route through a hundred bad ideas just to end up back at the start. It's like some weird creative tax we all have to pay. My first draft is usually the best one too, but I have to waste a week to prove it to myself.

Oh man, that's the worst feeling. You chase all these complex ideas and the answer was right there at the start. Happens to me all the time with writing, I'll rewrite a paragraph ten ways and go back to the first version.

Used to think the first idea was just a starting point you had to improve. Then I spent three days on a project outline only to scrap it all and go back to my original two-sentence note. Now I trust that first gut feeling a lot more.
