Vent: I keep seeing designers use the same fabric for everything
I was at a fabric market in Los Angeles last month, and a new designer showed me her whole spring line. Every single piece, from a flowy dress to a fitted blazer, was made from the same mid-weight linen. She said it was her 'signature fabric'. It looked off. The blazer had no shape and the dress didn't move right. I think a lot of new designers pick one fabric they love and try to make it work for every design, but it just doesn't. Different cuts and styles need different weights and drapes to look good. You can't force a stiff fabric to be flowy. How do you all decide which fabric to use for a new design idea? Do you start with the sketch or with the material?

Wait hold on, every single piece? Even the blazer in mid-weight linen? That's wild to me. Linen has almost zero give to it, so a fitted blazer with sleeves that need to bend is just asking for a bad time. The designer must have had clients returning stuff left and right after one wear, that fabric choice makes zero sense for that cut.
