The way we set posts has changed a lot in just ten years.

I was looking at a fence I put up in 2014, and the posts are all set in concrete. Back then, that was just how you did it, no question. Now, on a job in Cedar Rapids last month, we used a foam post mix for the first time. It set up faster in the cold and the client liked the cleaner look. Has anyone else made the switch, and how do you find it holds up over time?

Honestly, that foam stuff seems like a fad to me. Concrete has worked for a hundred years for a reason, it locks that post in solid. Seen a few foam jobs heave after a rough winter and then you're redoing the whole thing. Sometimes the old way is just better, lol.

Did they dig the hole deep enough? I've seen foam fail when guys cut corners on depth.

Ever see a foam post wobble? That's my answer.

Skylar's hardware store in town has been pushing that foam stuff for two years now and I still can't take it seriously. I watched my neighbor try to save 40 bucks on a mailbox post with it and that thing wobbles worse than a baby deer on ice skates. Concrete is heavy and annoying to mix but at least I know the post isn't going anywhere when I'm done. You want easy or you want permanent, pick one.
